‘Stuff’ is the noun I use to describe the medium I improvise with, it is a collective term which represents any item with a shape shifting quality, it is the stuff that comes to hand, no other word is loose enough.
'Stuffness' refers to unusual qualities habitually overlooked in these items.
My work includes within itself a conscious coming into being, a presence of self that illustrates what happens when we explore realities. Images that contain both the physical process of exploration with stuff and physical spaces, and the emotive illusion which describes the effect of this exploration on the soul and our perception of the everyday.
In terms of the emotive side of the work - balance, melancholia, the void, uncomfortable beauty and the edge of things are what interest me ... not the comfortable feeling of balance but the balance you feel when you are so happy the sad creeps in, and how this heightens your awareness of being. To achieve this I escape reality, deliberately getting lost, exploring, being alone, on a cliff, or in the dark. Often meditatively re-living a moment and allowing the work to materialise from memories.
Overall I would describe this as a response to a ritualistic dislocation from the everyday. The result tends to oscillate between fantasy and reality and reveal the irony in the gap, the audience sees that things are not what they seem. It is a form of creative improvisation, in order to re-see the world.
